5 Signs You Need Emergency Plumbing (Don't Wait!)
Not every plumbing issue is an emergency — but some can cause thousands in damage if you wait even a few hours. Here's how to tell the difference.
A dripping faucet can wait until Monday. A burst pipe in your basement at 2 AM cannot. Knowing the difference between a routine plumbing issue and a genuine emergency can save you thousands of dollars in water damage — and a lot of stress.
Here are five signs that you need to pick up the phone and call an emergency plumber immediately:
1. Water Is Actively Flooding Your Home
This one's obvious, but worth stating: if water is pouring into your home from a burst pipe, failed water heater, or backed-up sewer line, you need help now. Turn off your main water valve immediately (every homeowner should know where this is), then call us.
2. You Smell Sewage or Rotten Eggs
A persistent sewage smell inside your home can indicate a broken sewer line or a dried-out P-trap. While not always dangerous, sewer gas contains methane and hydrogen sulfide — both harmful in enclosed spaces. Don't ignore it.
3. Your Water Heater Is Leaking or Making Strange Noises
A leaking water heater can dump 40-80 gallons of hot water into your home. If you notice pooling water around the base, or hear loud popping/banging sounds, shut off the power and water supply to the unit and call for service.
4. Multiple Drains Are Backing Up Simultaneously
If one drain is slow, it's probably a local clog. If multiple drains throughout your home are backing up at the same time, you likely have a main sewer line blockage. This won't resolve on its own and will get worse.
5. You Have No Water At All
Complete loss of water pressure or no water flow at all could indicate a major pipe break, a failed pressure regulator, or a municipal supply issue. Check with your neighbors first — if they have water and you don't, call a plumber.
What to Do While You Wait
While waiting for your emergency plumber to arrive: shut off your main water valve, turn off water to the affected fixture if possible, move valuables away from standing water, and document the damage with photos for insurance purposes.
Remember: the cost of an emergency plumbing call is almost always less than the cost of water damage repair. When in doubt, call.
